HAPPY WINTER

Photography

This photo is my expressing emotion piece. I chose to depict happiness, as it is the best, and my favorite emotion to experience. I chose to photograph my friend Ana as she was drinking her coffee this morning because she was genuinely happy, and I believe the authenticity translates through the screen. I am at my happiest out in nature and under the sun, which is why I chose this setting for the portrait. I waited for a day with strong sunlight, because it improves your mood and releases serotonin. To emphasize the light in my editing process, I turned warmth and brightness up which I think mimics the bright, warm feeling of happiness. I also increased the saturation and vibrance because color brings more life to the image; it emphasizes her fun sweater and the beauty of nature.

WOMAN IN THE SUN

Watercolor and Colored Pencil

This piece is for Relieving Stress. One of the activities I find the most relaxing is stargazing, which is why I chose the subject of the sky. I was inspired by the folktales of the sun and the moon's relationship. The moon is yawning and waking up now that the sun is shining onto her, which is my interpretation of their cycle. Our moon is only visible to us because of the reflection of sunlight, so in a way, the moon is brought to life by the sun. While the subject I chose was based on a stress relief activity, the creation of this piece was stress relieving as well. I painted the sky first by layering various blues, blacks, and purples. I then drew the moon and sun separately, cut them out, and pasted them onto my night sky.
