RANDOM HAPPINESS

iPad, Procreate

After creating a list of things that makes me happy, I implemented cropping and layering of pictures conveying a cause of happiness on the list. I was inspired by the colorful theme of food (one of the top joy-inducing objects) to employ a theme of bright, bold colors. I chose to not implement a certain color theme to convey how simple making me happy can be; regardless of the color, if the object is brightly colored, endorphins are easily released within me. Putting together a collage of food, anime, pretty scenery, etc. allowed me to discover and pinpoint the actual causes of happiness, and after completing this art piece, I found myself feeling grateful for the things that I do have. This collage would be great for me to refer back to in times when my emotions are not being kept in check and soothe or bring joy to me.

APRIL MONTHLY PAGE

iPad, Procreate

Already experienced with creating bullet journal spreads, I challenged myself to create a digital spread for the first time. Inspired by lots of scrolling on Pinterest and my own maximal (vs minimal) style that crams details into the small canvas, I employed layering, clipping masks and alternating textures to create small shadows, producing a cut-out effect that simulates a real-life journal’s layers of sticky notes, stickers, pictures and washi tape. Together, these elements and the handwritten calendar create an appealing April monthly spread, inviting me to use and refer to (the personal events, exams and assignments have been hidden for privacy). To soften the spread’s rigidity, I used organic shapes (clouds) and curves to contrast the grid in the bottom right corner. I challenged myself even further by utilizing a dark blue background (in contrast to the normally white canvas), allowing the splashes of bright colors like pink, purple and yellow to truly shine on the digital medium, creating a newly-found aesthetic for me. This has proven to be a calming experience that allowed my brain to de-clutter as I took the time to write down the stress-inducing assignments and add flourishes to the spread.
